ECHO Chair by ZHA Turns Recycled Plastic into 3D-Printed Furniture Design

The ECHO Chair, designed by ZHA for Nagami, explores an alternative concept of the echo. Instead of exploring it as an acoustic phenomenon, it is conceptualised as a geometric transformation. By rejecting repetition as the core of echo, the phenomenon is presented as a single geometric logic unfolding into numerous spatial, material and structural expressions.

3D-printed from recycled plastic


ECHO Chair is an embodiment of a new design ecosystem. Produced using a large-scale 3D printer, the chair is made from extrusion polymer containing industrial waste, including single-use medical plastics.
The chair is made of two continuous surfaces coming from a shared structural edge.

Staying true to its name, one surface of the chair becomes an echo of another, developing from the same geometry. The two echoes, however, take on a different form. One part makes a seat and base while its echo evolves into the backrest and support. Envisioned as a single continuous system, the 3D-printed chair blurs the line between structure, surface and ergonomics.

The material palette explores different geometrical expressions. The chair comes in four shades ranging from translucent to warm mineral tones and opaque black. As a whole, the collection represents a continuous spectrum, embellished by the transition of various natural hues. The colour palette inspired by natural landscape strengthens the chair’s commitment to topics of resonance, continuity and rebirth.

Material and colour options

Measuring 543 × 634 × 699 mm, the chair’s sculptural presence is matched by ergonomic precision. ECHO Chair is available in four material and colour combinations:

  • rPETG with glass fibre — White
  • rPETG with glass fibre — Black
  • rPETG — White-to-translucent gradient
  • PETG with a bio-based cork composite — Caramel

PETG (Polyethene Terephthalate Glycol) is a tough, durable thermoplastic used widely in 3D printing and manufacturing, while rPETG is a recycled version of the same material.

Nagami

Nagami is a 3D manufacturing company located in Ávila, Spain, that turns waste into innovative designs. The company has been creating sustainable loungers, chairs, tables, and other furniture pieces for a decade. Apart from furniture designs, the company also works on architectural projects, such as the Johnson & Johnson Booth at the National Congress of Haematology 2025, the ocean-inspired façade for Dior in Puerto Banus, or a large-scale 3D-printed sculptural ceiling for the first Hell’s Kitchen restaurant in Europe.

ZHA

ZHA architectural and design practice was founded by Zaha Hadid in 1999 and has worked under the trademark licence from the Zaha Hadid Foundation until 2025. Owned completely by the company’s 500 employees, the practice works on architectural projects, interior design, virtual spaces, furniture design, exhibitions, and installations. Their standout projects include the MAXXI Museum of XXI Century Arts and the Central Bank of Iraq.
