Montera Lamp: A Toreador’s Hat made of Sand

Heading: Blanca Codina Studio

Crafted from sand, the Montera Lamp is shaped to echo a traditional toreador’s hat called “the montera“. The grainy, textured surface of the lamp additionally evokes the notion of the bullfighter’s arena, or as the Spanish would say, “the plaza de toros”.

Following the shape of a toreador’s hat

Designer Blanca Codina dedicated the Montera Lamp to her Spanish roots. By drawing inspiration from the montera hat, the lamp translates a traditional symbol of the Mediterranean country into a contemporary design. Codina used a binder-jet 3D printing process to create the lamp and hand finishing to boost the natural texture of the material.

Two light sources equipped with 2700K LEDs

Two concealed LED light sources emanate a soft glow enveloping the form of the lamp and surrounding it in warm, ambient lighting. The light is fragmented by the sand texture, which results in an interplay of light and shadow alongside the lamp’s curves. This interplay enhances the luminaire’s presence, depth, and materiality.

Available colours and materials

Launched on May 7, 2026, the Montera lamp is available at Otras Formas in various standard colourways. The lamp is priced at $1,600 and comes in two primary materials. The Bone White version of the lap is made of ceramic sand, while the Jase Blue model is created from quartz sand. Although different in colour, both materials provide the same sandy aesthetic and the tactility that urges to be touched. The Montera Lamp boasts 2700K LEDs and an E26 Socket with an in-line dimmer. Dimensions of 12.5” W / 7.5” D / 14” H make the lamp easy to store, move, and nest in any small shelf or table of the room.

Fascinating design world of Blanca Codina

Spanish-born, New York-based designer Blanca Codina is a co-founder and a creative director of Souper Studio, a Brooklyn-based collective which connects design and tangible objects. In her body of work, Codina challenges the traditional postulate that form should follow function, but instead focuses on giving objects new uses and behaviours. Her products are frequently inspired by everyday objects, including a Faucet lamp shaped like a simple home tap, an Easel Chair, a Box table and lamp, and an espadrilles-inspired Banyoles lamp. Codina’s portfolio spans furniture, lighting, and product designs.

Drawing from the long-standing tradition of bullfighting, Montera reimagines this cultural reference and turns it into a contemporary lighting fixture with sculptural character. Sand as a material serves as a portal between past and present, simultaneously embodying innovation and memory.
