From its abundance of beaches and enchanting cenotes to the archaeological sites found throughout the town, Tulum needs no introduction. But away from the hustle and bustle of Central Tulum lies a unique sanctuary on Mexico’s Caribbean coast waiting to be discovered.

Just minutes from the beach lies Calenda Tulum, a project by Mexico-based design firm Estudio Macías Peredo. This lavish collection of 12 private villas spans a one-hectare plot surrounded by lush jungle foliage, reminiscent of traditional pre-Hispanic gardens in Mexico.

The property’s idyllic setting is enough to draw visitors in. Calenda is located north of Sian Ka’an Biosphere, a million-acre UNESCO World Heritage site home to an array of protected flora and fauna. It is also nestled between historic archaeological sites considered sacred in Mayan culture to the east and the Kaan Luum and Nopalitos Lagoons to the west.

At every turn, Candela is surrounded by the city’s lush nature and rich history.

Inside Calenda’s Design & Architecture

While its location lures people in, its purposeful design and architecture make them stay.

Unmistakably, the most important element in Calenda’s design is its surroundings. Instead of damaging the natural environment and carving out brand new spaces from scratch, the architectural team integrated the land’s natural beauty into the design to preserve and respect it

The exterior features pyramid-shaped structures resembling age-old archaeological ruins that remain hidden in the jungle, as well as a stone base inspired by Tulum’s ancient pyramids that also act as a shield against flooding and potential hurricanes, where aesthetic and tradition meet functionality.

As you explore the villas, guests are greeted by an expansive interior made possible by its open-plan concept. With glass doors and wooden frames that open onto the private terraces, each complete with its own pool and sun deck, it blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living, offering guests the best of both worlds.

Most of the communal areas, such as the living room, dining area, and kitchen, are on the ground floor, while the guest rooms and master suites are on the upper floors.

Beyond the technicalities, the entire complex effortlessly exudes an air of warmth and hospitality. Almost like an instant sense of belonging, the moment you set foot on the property.

Better Together: Harnessing the Power of Collaboration

Drawing inspiration from Candela’s “conscious philosophy and environmental vision”, this innovative and transformative space is a 100% proud Mexican creation.

Conceptualised by architects Salvador Macías, Magui Peredo, and Diego Quirarte from Estudio Macías Peredo, Calenda’s design philosophy is centred around creating a lifestyle that connects its guests with nature like never before.

“The architectural design is a tribute to ancient Maya culture in both appearance and feel, juxtaposed with contemporary Mexico, honoring the past while looking towards the future.”

Known for their deep understanding of the environmental context around them, the firm’s ethos and values shine through in their work and in every detail of the project.
