Nebula is a lighting collection composed of suspended and wall-mounted glass fixtures recently recognised in the Artisan Glass Blown Lighting – Hanging Lights & Lamps category at the LIT Lighting Design Awards. To produce each piece, the designers from Patrizia Volpato used blown glass techniques, giving the products a distinct surface texture that helps diffuse light while reflecting its surroundings. When illuminated, the glass produces layered visual effects based on the angle of view and surrounding light conditions.
The fixtures are designed with downward-facing lights that ensure a cohesive, general glow while also taking the form of the unique visual qualities of the glass. This arrangement separates the functional lighting from the decorative effect, allowing users to enjoy their fixture without sacrificing aesthetics for functionality.
The glass surface has a soft, diffused quality that contributes to its visual performance, while the structure supporting the glass is composed of smaller metal components created through 3D printing. This avoids excess material waste and allows for precise fabrication. 3D metal printing also allows users to replace one of the parts if needed, reducing the need for overproduction and extending the product’s lifespan.
All pieces in the Nebula collection are made with durable materials intended for long-term use, with glass selected for its stability over time and low maintenance needs. Patrizia Volpato, based in the Venetian region and with roots in Murano’s glassmaking tradition, decided to combine historical techniques with modern production methods, giving us one-of-a-kind pieces that deserve to become family heirlooms.
