Paris, the city of love and the world’s fashion capital will transform into an open-air hub of exhibitions, installations, and showrooms for all design lovers for ten days in September. From September 5th to 14th, Paris Design Week will welcome the industry’s young professionals to showcase their fabulous creations and present an opportunity for new talents to be discovered.
Created by Maison & Objet, Paris Design Week’s main mission is to spotlight young designers in the field of design. Its uniqueness, compared to many other similar design events around the world, is in the fact that here guests get to visit private mansions of institutions, instead of every show and event being located at the same spot. And who wouldn’t want to use an opportunity to take a stroll around the city of love?
So add these locations to your itinerary with precise instructions from the Design Week’s organizers:
– Rive Gauche: wander through the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood, where collectors, renowned creators, artists, artisans, and interior designers showcase their galleries and offer their exclusive collections of exceptional furniture.
– Opéra / Concorde / Étoile: the vibrant Rive Droite, a hub of grand French tradition and global luxury.
– Marais / Bastille / République: the creative center of the
city, home to young designers, contemporary collectible
design galleries, and artisans.
– Palais-Royal / Place des Victoires / Pigalle:
the new hotspot for the latest trends, featuring fabric and carpet designers centered around Rue du Mail.
Those are not the only locations that Paris Design Week will intrigue you with. Design sur cours, for example, will allow designers to use courtyards and gardens of the capital’s most iconic and historical buildings to showcase their works. Creating a dialogue between pieces of classical architecture and works of contemporary design are such installations as the 18th-century courtyard of Hôtel de Soubise with an installation by designer Lucas Huillet and perfumer Alexandre Helwani; Peter Marino lighting up l’Orangerie and gardens of Hôtel de Sully, Place des Vosges, with his large compressed balloons, creating an optical confusion of 2D and 3D; a grandiose four-poster bed by Uchronia studio is set to transform the Hôtel de la Marine, the former royal furniture repository; and many others.
Maison&Objet’s focus on bringing forth the up-and-coming creators is emphasized by their Rising Talents Awards, which this year will highlight designers from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Iceland. In addition to the Rising Talents Awards, the Future on Stage competition will return spotlighting innovative start-ups that redefine the limits of design. Annually three innovative pioneering businesses get a chance to present their works at the show’s exhibition space. This year’s contestants are Sungai Design from Indonesia with its premium furniture crafted from recycled river plastic, Konqrit from Argentina with artistically designed bathtubs, and Apollo Wooden Wheelchairs from France redesigning medical equipment with sleek wooden designs.
Besides the awards and the competition, Paris Design Week will feature workshops, conferences, and a special showroom where international designers can showcase their work, including exclusive residency projects and historic design collections. Among the international talents, special attention will be brought to Chinese designers this year, to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of French-Chinese diplomatic relations.
This September Paris will present a variety of talents, creativity, and design on its streets, with visitors from around the world having a chance to experience this celebration of culture. What better place to indulge in the decor and style, than in the city where the future trends are born? In Paris, every corner leads you to new experiences, timeless design, and unexpected moments of inspiration. With Paris Design Week you have an opportunity to learn about young designers before they become the next big names in the industry.
