A prime example of this eco-conscious design movement is Earthbound™, a Croatian footwear brand founded by brothers Hrvoje and Domagoj Boljar. With sneakers made of 97% natural materials, Earthbound™ is the first Croatian-certified B Corporation, signifying their commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
Earthbound™‘s beginnings trace back to a clear realization of how traditional shoe-making harms the environment. Combining their expertise and passion for innovation, Hrvoje Boljar, a product designer with a master’s degree in industrial design, and his brother Domagoj, who brings extensive experience from CEO roles in the footwear industry, jointly identified the pressing need for change. Together, they set out on a mission to transform the industry landscape. In 2018, they introduced their ecological footwear brand – MIRET.
After 5 years of rethinking footwear under the brand name MIRET, in 2023, they underwent a transition from Miret to Earthbound™. The decision stemmed from a realization that it was time for a name that authentically reflects their values, putting ecology first in everything they do.
Earthbound™’s dedication to sustainability is evident in their pursuit of certifications. In 2023, they became the first footwear brand in Croatia to achieve B Corp certification. The rigorous process of B Corp certification is a testament to their dedication to environmental and social responsibility and this milestone marked a pivotal moment in their mission. What also sets Earthbound™ apart is their sneakers’ distinction as the first footwear to receive OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification for the whole product, ensuring that every component is free from harmful substances.
Earthbound™’s vision revolves around sustainability without compromise. Their bio-based sneakers serve as a viable alternative to conventional footwear, with designs that are often more durable and comfortable than less eco-friendly solutions.
By rejecting petroleum derivatives and toxic chemicals commonly found in shoe production, Earthbound™ seeks to minimize environmental harm from the outset. Their ultimate goal? To create the “zero-impact” shoe – compostable, recyclable, and completely made from sustainably grown materials. The need for such innovation is emphasized by the alarming statistics on how much the shoe industry affects the environment. With billions of shoes produced annually, predominantly from oil derivatives and leather, the ecological toll is undeniable.
A fundamental aspect of Earthbound™’s strategy is the careful selection of materials. Each component is thoughtfully chosen to ensure a product that exceeds consumer expectations while remaining true to their ecological values. From wool which contains lanolin, a magical substance making wool naturally water and stain-repellent, to hemp’s strength, breathability, and flexibility ensuring comfort. The cork footbed, nestled in soft wool felt, not only provides insulation but contains the amazing ingredient subherin, an antimicrobial marvel. Supported by natural latex outsoles, these sneakers offer superior grip and durability, contributing to their naturally refreshing scent.
While 97% of Earthbound™ sneakers are natural, the remaining 3% of synthetic materials are used for durability, an essential aspect of sustainable footwear, where alternatives are still being explored.
