In the heart of chilly Bergen, Norway, Zenisk, a design company, has taken artisan glass blowing to new heights. They clinched the prestigious LIT Lighting Design Awards in 2023 for their magnum opus—the Luminous Sound Chandelier.
Designed by Kristin Bredal, Eyveig Antonsdottir, Stian Lindquist, and Sverre Gedde Mojord, this masterpiece graces Nygaarden’s seven-story atrium. Illuminating the space with ethereal beauty, 106 hand-blown glass orbs, suspended by brass, dance in perfect harmony, casting a spellbinding luminosity. The project, aptly named “Lysende klang” or “Luminous Sound,” transcends conventional lighting design by integrating sustainability, aesthetics, and functionality.
As part of a larger initiative by Entra Real Estate to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification, the Luminous Sound Chandelier stands as a symbol of sustainable elegance. The design concept focuses on creating a vertical, harmonious commentary that enriches the communal spaces of the building.
The chandelier’s sustainability approach is multifaceted. Crafted from durable materials like hand-blown glass and brass, it promises not only visual allure but lasting functionality. The integration of long-life light sources ensures a lifespan of 30,000 hours, reducing the need for frequent maintenance. The ingenious use of a motorized system further streamlines upkeep, eliminating the need for cumbersome lifts.
In line with the building’s commitment to use natural daylight, the chandelier’s sleek design does not overshadow or hinder the influx of sunlight into the atrium. It complements the architecture’s ethos of uplifting communal spaces, creating an environment that is not just illuminated but also invigorated by design.
