Ibiza is known for its magical beaches and out-of-this-world energy, so a peaceful resort where guests can immerse themselves in the experience is a must. The Sabina Estates is exactly this, a place to relax and enjoy the best things in life. The resort’s lighting design, distinguished by the prestigious LIT Lighting Design Awards, was created by the studio Concept Lighting Lab to enhance both the architectural characteristics of the structure and the guests’ experience.
Function and image
The Sabina Estates lighting project seamlessly blends practicality with aesthetic appeal. The design team, led by Claudia Kappl Joy, was tasked to create the lighting design of three villas and a clubhouse, which were designed by three different architecture studios: Rolf Blakstad, RomanoArquitectos and EstudioVila13.
Rolf Blakstad designed one of the unique villas and the 1,485m2 clubhouse, which is considered the heart of the Sabina community. Divided into 2 levels, the main space offers the daily-life experience: it boasts a restaurant, bars, breakout rooms, office space and a large pool surrounded by outdoor seating. The lower area offers the fun part of Ibiza: a private dance/nightclub, a smoking room, a library, a bowling alley, a spa and a gym, an outdoor amphitheatre, and a temple.
Illuminating the resort
The challenge was to create a lighting design that could enhance each architect’s different approaches to a paradisic resort while still ensuring that each guest could enjoy a peaceful time on the island. The lighting design studio reached its goal by integrating ceiling-mounted downlights and incorporating light into ledges and seating. The result is a play of light and shadow that illuminates each texture and feature of the space, respecting both the architects and the visitors.
Crafting the Ibiza experience
The lighting design considers the human experience by trying to foster a feeling of calm and serenity amidst the vibrant energy of Ibiza. By blending light with diverse architectural styles, each space gets the perfect light fixtures, ensuring an aesthetical cohesiveness that shows the team’s ability to adapt and innovate.
